The move across the border comes after weeks of briefings from western allies, with US and UK officials convinced Russia would attempt to take Ukraine.

The attack followed a lengthy address from Vladimir Putin to the Russian people in which he declared that, as a former Soviet state, the country belonged with Russia.

Boris Johnson has ordered a COBRA meeting to decide the next steps for the UK, as leaders gravitate towards sanctions.

President Joe Biden has already greenlit “limited” economic sanctions for Russia, warning of a more severe response if Mr Putin continued to test Ukraine’s sovereignty.

British officials have weighed similar options, with a “barrage” of sanctions on the horizon.

But the potential policy has met criticism in the UK and elsewhere as not enough to deter further aggression.
