A gunman drove onto a golf course and shot dead a dad-of-two who’d witnessed a crime taking place, foreign media reports.

Professional golfer Gene Siller, 46, died at Pinetree Country Club near the city of Kennesaw in Georgia, the US, on Saturday, July 3.

He was approaching the 10th hole before he was shot in the head.

The attacker, who has not yet been identified and is still at large, left a pickup truck containing the bodies of two other men who had also been fatally shot.

One of them was identified as the truck’s registered owner Paul Pierson, 76.

The Cobb County Police Department said: "It does not appear he [Siller] was targeted."

Officers believe he was killed because he "happened upon a crime in progress involving the unknown suspect and the two deceased males".

Mr Pierson and the other dead man "appear to have no relation to the location at all".

Investigators told CNN that they are asking locals to check their doorbell videos for any potential clues.

Mr Siller, 41, director of golf at the club, leaves behind his wife and two children, ages 6 and 7.

Jim Richerson, PGA of America president, said in a statement: "We are truly heartbroken to hear about the senseless murder that took place yesterday at Pine Tree Country Club in Georgia that took the life of PGA member Gene Siller.

"PGA of America sends our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathy to his family, club and the Georgia PGA Community."

Rand Eberhard, a local pastor who knew Mr Siller, added: "Gene was a man of compassion, he loved everybody.

"It's a big void that is left in our community to lose such an important guy."

The country club was due to reopen on Wednesday, July 7, but the 10th hole will remain closed.

Mr Siller's wife Ashley and other family members visited the course and left flowers at a memorial site.
