Girl, 6, left ‘lifeless’ after being mauled by two dogs when playing in garden

A six-year-old girl was left lying “lifeless” with a “big hole in her chest” after being attacked by two Bull Arab dogs.

Laquarna Chapman Palmer suffered life-threatening injuries in the attack in Logan, near Brisbane, Australia on Monday afternoon.

Her uncle Clint Chapman told reporters that he had been watching TV when he heard "heard screams" and ran to help.

"I saw my brother and my little niece over the fence,” he said.

Clint’s brother Reece Chapman, told Channel 9's Today that he leaped over the fence to try to help: "I thought she was dead honestly, because she was lying there lifeless," he said. "On her chest was a big hole."

Reece was also left with bites on his leg that required 10 stitches.

“I saw him trying to throw her back over and the dogs were just biting onto his leg,” Clint added. “She must have been on the fence but then (got) into their yard.

"I didn't know what to do," he told ABC News, "I just called the ambulance.”

Queensland Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Mark Wheeler said the incident was "absolutely horrendous".

"There will be obviously a review of what's occurred," he said.

"A dog, particularly a large dog, and a young child, we know that can be a really catastrophic outcome.

Clint says that despite her serious injuries, Laquarna is responding well to treatment: “They did a keyhole surgery to check for internal bleeding,” he said. “She should be alright … she sounded good when I spoke to her on the phone last night.

"I asked her, 'Are you in pain' and she's like, 'No'."

Bull Arabs, a new breed derived from Bull Terriers, have already developed a disturbing reputation for aggressive behaviour, with several attacks on children and farm animals.

The owner of the two dogs, which were named Drago and Mazakeet, says he was “distraught”.

"It wasn't common knowledge they were dangerous dogs,” dog owner Matt Hinds said, “but everyone knew not to enter our yard because they were guard dogs.”

"We believe the child was playing with our son who was playing in our backyard. We don't know what's happened, we just heard the dogs”.

The two animals have since been put down. "It was a hard decision, but it was the right decision," he said.
