Fire crews scrambled to school after ‘huge explosion’ as smoke seen for miles

Fire crews are attending a blaze at a school in Aberdeen following unconfirmed reports of an explosion.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue service says four pumps and a height vehicle have been sent to Northfield Academy after it received a call shortly before 1:45pm on Monday.

There have been multiple reports from witnesses who claim to have heard a "huge explosion" in the area at the time.

Alarming photos and video posted to social media show black smoke billowing high into the air above the school, which is located near NHS Grampian.

A spokesperson for the hospital confirmed the fire is located at the school.

Local politician Guy Ingerson posted a video on Twitter showing the school on fire, adding: "Just heard an explosion near or at Northfield Academy. Really worried about the people there."

Another local said: "I heard an explosion around 13:48, I hope no one got hurt!"

Scottish Fire and Rescue and Police Scotland have both been contacted for information.

Northfield Academy is a secondary school first opened in 1956. It has a roll of approximately 800 students.
