Terrified locals ran into the streets this morning as a strong earthquake struck off the eastern Italian resort of Rimini.
The 5.7 magnitude earthquake happened shortly after 7am local time and was felt as far as Rome on the other side of the country, and in the northern regions of Veneto, Friuli and Trentino.
Video shows smashed bottles of wine strewn across a supermarket floor after they were thrown from the shelves during the earthquake.
The train station in the city of Ancona was also damaged, with fallen masonry covering the stairs and station platform.
A resident in Fano, a town between Rimini and Ancona, told Ansa news that streetlights were swaying during the earthquake. They said: ‘Everything was shaking violently, a dreadful feeling, and people poured into the street.’

The strong earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck off Italy’s Adriatic coast early on Wednesday
Local TV presenter Massimo Foghetti was doing a press review when the studio began to shake violently. Foghetti can be seen quickly leaving his desk as he says: ‘Attention, attention, an earthquake!’
He added: ‘It’s happening right now. A big earthquake right now has hit the town of Fano. Attention, we will try to see what has fallen.’
The studio doors, located behind Foghetti’s desk, can be seen shaking up and down.
Foghetti emerged again and sat back down at his desk, telling viewers: ‘It really was a very very big earthquake. Now it’s calm but there could be aftershocks. Here’s another.’
He then left his desk again, saying off screen: ‘Let’s leave, what are we doing? Let’s stop the press review.’
The earthquake caused no serious damage or injuries, according to initial reports.

‘No injuries at the moment,’ a spokesman for Italy’s Civil Protection said, as the agency tweeted that checks on the ground were continuing.
The quake’s epicentre was at 21 miles offshore from Pesaro, a seaside city in the eastern Marche region, at a depth of 4.3 miles, the Italian Geophysics and Volcanology Institute (INGV) said.
As a precaution, schools in Pesaro and other nearby cities were closed, and rail traffic passing through Pesaro along the Adriatic coast was suspended.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office said she was ‘in constant contact’ with Civil Protection authorities and the head of the Marche region to follow developments.
