Doorbell camera records unnerving rumble as 2.8 earthquake hits West Midlands
A doorbell camera has caught the incredible moment an earthquake hit the West Midlands on Monday (February 21).
The noticeable quake struck Walsall, nine miles northwest of Birmingham, just before 11 pm on Monday evening and it had a magnitude of 2.8, according to experts.
Shaking was felt up to 20km away – with some people in Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Lichfield, and Sutton Coldfield also noticing the effects.
In the footage, the doorbell cam records a low rumbling sound that comes in two short bursts, activating the light sensors both times.
Scott Edwards, who works for Reach PLC, told Birmingham Live: "Initially, I thought it was a large gust of wind hitting the house, got used to that this week, but then the rumble vibrated the whole building.
"No car alarms went off, or house alarms so I checked the camera and heard the noise, before seeing on social media people across the area had experienced the same thing."
He added: "Then I saw the geological survey had reported a small earthquake."
On Twitter, others have been reacting to the rare quake and some said they had even observed their homes shaking – although others slept through it.
Annie said: "It literally felt like someone slammed the door really hard causing the house to shake a little."
Joanne remarked: "Has anybody else’s house just felt like it moved? Really strange #brownhills could it have been a small #earthquake it wasn’t just me my husband felt it too."
Someone else commented: "It was like a big thump on the walls of the house. I thought one of the kids had fallen out of bed."
Another shared: "The epicentre was only a few hundred yards from our house. Shook the house for around 3-4 seconds. Wife and kids slept straight through it."
