A woman was left fuming after being slapped with a fine for not picking up dog poo left by someone else's pooch.

Rebekah Watt had made a trip to the Pets at Home shop in Newark, Nottinghamshire with her five-month-old puppy Lola to stock up on goods for her pet.

While there she had to take her dog around the back of the shop for what she claims was 'only a wee'.

She was then stopped from re-entering the shop when a warden asked her to show them where she had taken the dog. When they got to the spot, the warden is said to have pointed to some dog poo on a patch of grass nearby.

Despite protesting her and Lola's innocence by insisting that the poo came from another dog, Rebekah was then issued a fine.

She paid the charge within the required 14 days, but is now taking her case to a magistrate's court after an appeal was refused.

Rebekah told the Newark Advertiser: "It may seem petty but it’s so frustrating because it had nothing to do with me."

Her dismay has only grown since after she found out the ticket appeal had not been reviewed by her local authority, but was instead handled by a private company named Waste Investigations Support and Enforcement (WISE) — the very same firm that had taken her money.

Reflecting on what she believed was a "conflict of interest", she told the local paper: "Don’t get me wrong, I totally support the new partnership as where I live in Morton and Fiskerton there aren’t a lot of bins and you see dog mess all the time. It’s awful people don’t pick their waste up."

Roger Jackson, Chairman of the Leisure and environment committee at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said the contract with WISE was signed for a one-year period, and would help reduce dog fouling by identifying irresponsible owners.
