Does DC Mayor Muriel Bowser have kids?
Muriel Bowser adopted a young daughter named Miranda in 2018.
Miranda, who was just a few months old when Bowser took her in, is the mayor's only child.
“Miranda’s in charge, basically of how you go, when you go, when she wants to eat,” Bowser told WAMU in 2019.
“Luckily, she is a sweetheart. She has a very pleasant temperament, but you fully realize you can’t control everything.”
She said at the time that raising Miranda while serving as mayor is quite challenging at times, and that she is not afraid to enlist help.
“I have tried very hard to build a village of friends and family that can be helpful when I need it,” Bowser told WAMU.
“I have a non-traditional work schedule. For me, it’s just about being able to manage.
"My work is cyclical. Sometimes I have more longer-hour days than other times of the year, so just being able to look ahead and plan a lot better than I used to to make sure we’re covered.”
She would add: “We’re just a normal little family on Orchid Street, and the things they want for their kids I want for mine too.”
What happened to Bowser's only sister?
Mercia Bowser died from complications related to Covid-19 in February of 2021.
"Mercia was loved immensely and will be missed greatly, as she joins the legion of angels who have gone home too soon due to the pandemic," the mayor said in a statement.
"I ask that you continue to keep those who have been lost or impacted by the pandemic and those who are working so hard to protect us from it in your thoughts and prayers, and I respectfully request that my family and I are granted the time and space we need to mourn the loss of Mercia."
The mayor added: “We are grateful to the doctors and nurses at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, who heroically treated her for Covid-19 related pneumonia until her death.
"We thank you for your kindness and will share how our family will honor Mercia, my only sister and oldest sibling, and her beautiful spirit in the coming days.”
She said her sister "was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend."
"She worked tirelessly for children, the elderly, and those with behavioral disorders until her retirement and beyond."
Mercia Bowser was born on March 7, 1956.
