Denver weather: Three-day weekend comes to a hot and stormy end

Monday’s forecast calls for an afternoon filled with hot temperatures and a significant chance of thunderstorms for the Denver metro and surrounding areas.

The National Weather Service in Boulder has issued a flash flood watch starting at noon Monday for the northern mountains and the northern foothills. Burn scar areas may be subject to flash floods and debris flows due to heavy rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Small hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible in these areas Monday.

In Denver, increased cloud coverage, rain, and thunderstorms are likely the afternoon with a high of 94 degrees. Wind gusts will pick up as fast as 18 mph. There’s a 50% chance of precipitation after 2 p.m.

The possibility of storms is higher in the evening at 60% with wind speeds up to 15 mph and gusts up to 24 mph. The low will drop to 63 degrees.

By Tuesday, the storm threat will wind down to 20%, but the high will drop by 11 degrees to 83 degrees. An airmass will bring in below-seasonal temperatures NWS forecasts partly sunny skies and calmer winds. Tuesday evening will have a slight chance of thunderstorms with a low of 60 degrees.

A streak of sunny, warmer days is predicted to start Wednesday as the airmass dries out with a high of 89 degrees.
