Denver weather: Temperatures plunge below zero; how long will the freeze last?

Denver’s temperature dropped below freezing around 5 p.m. Thursday. It won’t be until midday Tuesday that the mercury rises once more above freezing.

Friday morning’s temperature dropped to minus-1 in downtown Denver, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. It was the first time in 373 days that the Mile High City dropped below zero, ending the 18th longest streak of zero degrees or warmer days in the city’s recorded weather history. The early morning flurries will be accompanied by fog, eventually warming to 22 degrees.

Overnight there will be flurries as the temperature plummets back to 5 degrees. Little to no snow accumulation is expected throughout the day and night. There is a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 5 a.m. Saturday for the north-central Colorado mountains above 9,000 feet. Total snow accumulation could reach 18 inches, with winds gusting as high as 40 mph.

Saturday will be more of the same, with flurries most of the day and a high of 20 degrees. The temperature will dip just below zero overnight.

Sunday is expected to be the coldest day yet with a high of 10 degrees and a low of minus-5. More flurries will arrive during the bone-chilling day.

Monday will climb back into the 20s but follow the same pattern with flurries and temperatures into the teens overnight.

Tuesday could finally get Denver back into the 30s.
