Denver weather: Record-breaking heat eases this week

The Front Range will cool down this week after a few days of record-breaking heat.

Temperatures will top out in the high 80s this week — instead of the high 90s — as a cold front moves across the state, said Caitlyn Mensch, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service at Boulder.

“At least compared to last week, any relief is great,” she said.

Denver’s heat last week broke daily high records on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, she said. Thursday’s high of 96 degrees is the hottest the city has been on Sept. 9 since 1994, when the previous record of 94 degrees was set, she said. Friday and Saturday’s highs of 99 degrees and 97 degrees shattered daily high records set in 2018, she said, when both days topped out at 93 degrees.

As the first of a series of cold fronts moves into the region Sunday, temperatures are expected to climb to just 85 degrees, and there’s a chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms. The weather could turn severe Sunday afternoon in some areas, most likely to the east of the Interstate 25 corridor, Mensch said.

The rainy weather will continue through the start of the week, with a chance for rain and scattered storms on both Monday and Tuesday.

Skies are expected to clear Wednesday and bring both sunshine and climbing temperatures, with highs at the end of the week peaking at about 89 degrees.
