Denver weather: Metro area under a Winter Storm Warning as snow approaches.

A winter storm warning is posted for the Denver metro area through 5 a.m. Thursday with up to 8 inches of snow possible in parts of the metro area and up to 12 inches in areas of the foothills.

Snow, heavy at times, is expected in Denver on Wednesday afternoon, mainly after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service forecast. Skies are cloudy and temperatures will likely drop as the day progresses. At about noon, the temperature in Denver was 28 degrees.

At Denver International Airport, 31 flights were delayed and five flights were canceled between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., according to flightaware.com, as airport officials prepare for the approaching winter storm.

The chance of snow in Denver on Wednesday is 70%, with about 2 inches possible, the weather service said. Tonight in Denver snow is expected to be heavy at times, with a 90% chance mainly before 3 a.m. and new accumulation between 3 to 7 inches. The low overnight temperature will be about 15 degrees.

Snow on late-afternoon Wednesday is expected to by heaviest west of the Interstate 25 and along the foothills, mainly on east-facing slopes. The afternoon commute in the metro area is expected to slick and slippery.

The Thursday morning commute in the metro area will likely be slowed by the wintry weather. The storm system will be out area by Thursday afternoon and skies will be sunny, according to the weather service. It will remain cold, with a high temperature of 37 degrees.

After a mild and dry weekend along the Front Range, the next storm system with colder weather and periods of snow is due in the area on Monday, the weather service said.
