David Beckham let a Ukrainian doctor take over his Instagram account, which is followed by 71.5million users, to highlight the difficulties medical professionals are facing while working during the Russian invasion.

The UNICEF ambassador handed over his Instagram to Dr Iryna, who is the head of a perinatal centre in Kharkiv, to show his followers the grim reality Ukrainians are facing on a daily basis and encourage donations.

Shocking videos and images showed newborn babies and patients being treated in a basement whilst child anaesthesiologist, Iryna and other medical professionals were helping pregnant women safely give birth.

Speaking in a video on Instagram, the former football ace said: ‘Hi everyone, so I’m handing over my social media to Iryna, the Head of the Regional Perinatal Centre in Kharkiv, Ukraine where she is helping pregnant mothers give birth safely.

‘Thanks to your donations, the oxygen generators they have received are helping newborns survive in appalling conditions.’

Dramatic footage showed the maternity bunker as Iryna took viewers through a day in her life on the frontline.

Iryna said she now works ’24/7′ and the first day that Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine last month, she spent three hours evacuating mothers and pregnant women to the basement.

Heartbreakingly, all babies who are in intensive care have to remain in main part of the centre because they rely on equipment that cannot be moved.

Writing on Instagram Stories, she said: ‘On the first day of war, all pregnant women and mothers were evacuated to the basement. It was a terrible three hours that we spent together.

‘Unfortunately, we can’t take babies who are in intensive care to the basement because they rely on life-saving equipment.

‘The first days were the most difficult. We had to learn how to work with bombings and strikes. My workday is 24/7 now, I’m here all day.’

Iryna opened up about the brutal reality of war and how cities have been destroyed – leaving vulnerable new mothers homeless.

She added: ‘Now. I’m not only the head of the centre but I continue to work as a paediatric anaesthesiologist. I unload cargo, work on logistics and offer emotional support.

‘This is Yana and her baby son Mykhailo. on the second day of the war, he was born with breathing problems. He is better now, but his family’s house was destroyed and they can’t go back.

‘UNICEF’s support is very important to us, They have been delivering supplies in Ukraine for years and they have good logistics to deliver ready-to-use kits to maternity hospitals.

‘The oxygen generators we received from UNICEF help provide oxygen for children in the basement

We are probably risking our lives, but we don’t think about it at all. We love our work.

Doctors and nurses here, we worry, we cry but none of us will give up. Thank you to everyone who watched my story to everyone who is helping Ukrainian children. Every single donation matters.’

The footballer’s bid to raise money comes as he and his wife Victoria pledged £1million to provide immediate aid to the people of Ukraine earlier this month.

The 46-year-old launched an emergency appeal via his 7 Fund for UNICEF to help provide support to children affected in the war-torn country.

And sources close to the couple revealed to MailOnline, David and Victoria have donated £1million of their own money to the charity initiative.
