Cruel man set pregnant girlfriend on fire after couple rowed over when to marry

In a horrific case of a marriage row gone wrong, a man has doused his pregnant partner in petrol, set her alight and fled.

The couple, identified only as Rahul and Pragati, live together in Sonipat, a town north of Dehli in India. Neighbours heard her agonising screams and bundled into the house to find her on fire. They were then able to rush her to hospital.

Police have explained that the couple frequently argued over when they were going to get married, with Pragati wanting to arrange it sooner rather than later.

She has also told police that she is pregnant.

On the day of the sickening attack, she had demanded that her partner call his parents to let them know about their relationship. A scuffle then turned ugly when Rahul grabbed some petrol from their kitchen and used it to set her alight.

Neighbours were able to put her out, but not before she suffered brutal, life-threatening burns. She has now been transferred to a specialist burns hospital in Delhi.

There have been no updates about her current condition.

After Pragati lodged a formal complaint against her partner and with a statement logged, police have been conducting raids in an attempt to catch Rahul. They have already registered a case against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

This isn't the first time that hospitals in Delhi have had to deal with such a case in recent weeks.

A man from east India set both his wife and mother-in-law and then himself alight last month before all three were rushed to the city for specialist treatment.

Mohan Das' family were in court for a family dispute. It is believed that this sparked an argument between the three, which led him to use kerosene to set them all on fire.
