Joe Biden recently celebrated a year since he became US President but several opinion polls in the US are already showing the 79-year-old Democrat’s popularity in rapid decline. Last week, his approval rating in a key average of major polls slumped below 40 percent for the first time since he took office. The Real Clear Politics average of all recent national surveys revealed just 39.8 percent of Americans approved of the US President’s performance, while more than half (54.4) percent disapproved.
During his first months in office, Mr Biden’s approval rating had been above 50 percent but that began to plummet amid the chaotic and deadly withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan last August.
Pressure mounted recently when it was revealed US inflation had surged to 7.5 percent in what was the fastest annual rise in 40 years.
The US stock market also suffered a shocking start to the year, with the S&P 500 index slumping 5.3 percent last month – its weakest January since the depths of the global financial crisis in 2009.
Nile Gardiner, a Washington-based foreign policy analyst and former aide to Margaret Thatcher, launched a blistering attack against Mr Biden and his performance as US President thus far.
He told Express.co.uk: “Biden’s first year as President has been an absolute disaster, both for the US and the free world.
“The US is in a terrible state of decline. We have soaring inflation, sinking stock markets, rapidly rising violent crime across most major cities.
“He is driving the decline of the world’s superpower.
“Most opinion polls show he is hugely unpopular – Americans think his presidency is a huge failure.
“The withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan was absolutely catastrophic and that was the biggest US foreign policy disaster since the Vietnam era.
“It was the humiliation of the world’s superpower.
“The reality is many US allies now don’t trust Biden while the adversaries to the US are growing stronger.”
Mr Gardiner raged it is an “embarrassment and humiliation” to have Mr Biden as president, accusing him of being “clearly out of his depth”.

He accused the Democrat of “driving America’s relentless decline” and claimed he is “clearly incapable” of proving to be an effective leader of the free world.
The expert concluded: “It’s an embarrassment and humiliation for the US when we have the leader of the free world who is clearly out of his depth.
“This is a clueless, out of touch president who has utter contempt for the role the US plays as the leader of the free world, driving America’s relentless decline.
“The US needs real leadership from someone who actually believes in America and will lead the free world.
“Joe Biden is clearly incapable of doing that.”
On Saturday, Mr Biden warned Russian President Vladimir Putin in a phone call between the two leaders that invading Ukraine would cause “widespread human suffering” and “diminish Russia’s standing”.
The White House said: “President Biden was clear that, if Russia undertakes a further invasion of Ukraine, the United States together with our allies and partners will respond decisively and impose swift and severe costs on Russia.
“President Biden reiterated that a further Russian invasion of Ukraine would produce widespread human suffering and diminish Russia’s standing.”
