- Steven Trevor Nelson, 35, pointed a fake gun at an officer on the side of the M1
- Road policing officer had thought they were responding to a man in distress
- Police said Nelson had then spat on and tried to bite officers after his arrest
- The 35-year-old was sentenced to 14 months in jail in Sheffield Crown Court
The chilling moment a man points what appears to be a gun at police before trying to bite and spit on officers when he is arrested has been revealed.
Dashcam footage shows how 35-year-old Steven Trevor Nelson imitated shooting a roads policing officer in broad daylight.
The officer is approaches Nelson, who is seen wearing black trousers and a sweatshirt as he stands on the side of the M1 at about 9am on March 23.
As Nelson walks towards the car he reaches into his back pocket and pulls out what appeared to police at the time to be a firearm.
He then aimed the ‘gun’ at the officer who swiftly retreated to the police car, reversed onto the motorway and called for backup.

Nelson, of no fixed abode, was then arrested and put in the back of a police car where he continued to antagonise officers.
South Yorkshire Police said Nelson was ‘spitting and trying to bite another roads policing officer’ during the journey.

Police said the initial officer had responded to what he believed was a man in distress and had closed the road to offer him help.
When he returned with backup, armed police were met with a ‘hostile and threatening’ Nelson who once again pointed the piece of aluminum at them.
On October 19, Nelson appeared in Sheffield Crown Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to charges of possession of an imitation firearm to cause fear of violence and assault on an emergency worker.
He was sentenced to 14 months behind bars – 12 months for firearm sentences and two months to be served consecutively for assaulting a first responder.
Nelson was also ordered to pay a £187 victim surcharge.

Chief Superintendent of the Operational Support Unit Cherie Buttle said: ‘This is a poignant reflection of how selfless our officers are.
‘The officer subjected to fear was trying to provide help to a man he believed to be in crisis. During his interviews Nelson showed no remorse for his actions, or what his true intentions were.’
Superintendent Buttle said the officer’s colleagues had ‘immediately’ responded to his calls for back up, during which two more officers were assaulted.
‘We are thankful that the majority of the public are supportive of our officers and their actions, and I hope that the sentencing of Nelson sends a strong message to those who have a lack of respect that it will not be tolerated,’ he said.
‘We’re human too.’
