Children treated for severe sunburn as mercury tops 30C on hottest day of year
Children had to be treated for extreme sunburn across England and Wales yesterday as the UK experienced the hottest day of the year so far.
Temperatures of over 30C was recorded in both countries.
Three children were taken to the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery in Swansea with sunburn on "fairly large areas of their bodies".
The Swansea Bay University health board released a statement: "Our burns centre has been treating a lot of children with serious sunburn and staff fear a further surge in cases in the coming days.
"Please remember to be sun safe. Just a few minutes applying a high-factor sun screen could save you and your child a lot of pain and suffering."
Public health authorities called for people to look after anyone who might be at risk from the scorching temperatures, including those with underlying health conditions and the elderly.
A temperature of 30.7C was recorded in North Yorkshire on Saturday.
Northern Ireland recorded its hottest day ever on Saturday with a temperature of 31.2C, the previous record was 30.8C was reached in 1976 and 1983.
The heat isn't forecasted to go away anytime soon either, the Met Office says the UK should expect sunny spells and a warm night, especially in the south of England.
A Met Office spokesperson said: "We are expecting temperatures to continue on the high side right through until Thursday, although the day-to-day detail will change and there is a tendency for the highest maximum temperatures to migrate west.
"So, we are expecting on Monday and Tuesday for the maximum temperatures to be in the south-west and in south Wales, and then later in the week temperatures climbing across Northern Ireland and the north-west."
"Dry, very warm or hot" conditions are expected to last into the week, with isolated heavy showers possible, though with cloudier and cooler periods in the north and along the east coast.
Freedom Day: Full list of lockdown rules still in force from today
Restless Brits took to Twitter this morning to air their frustrations with their poor night's sleep in the high temperatures.
"Too hot to sleep, too tired to get up. Welcome to Monday," one Twitter user wrote.
Another said: "Anyone else feel like bacon in chip fat? Jeez it's hot.. can't sleep."
