CDOT announces full road closures for new $5 million dollar project

The Colorado Department of Transportation has signed onto a project costing $5 million.

CDOT, along with its contractor, Lumin8 Transportation Technologies will be replacing tunnel lighting on Tunnels 1-3, 5 and 6 along US 6 between CO 58 and CO 93 and Interstate 70 near Idaho Springs.

“The project will modernize the lighting in all five tunnels by replacing existing lighting with new LED tunnel lights, installing lane traffic control signals at the tunnel portals and other infrastructure updates,” according to CDOT.

The new lights will be more energy efficient and help with visibility.

The work has been divided into two phases. The first phase will begin this month and is expected to last until June 2021. The second phase is expected to end this fall.

Full road closures will happen Sunday nights from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. and Monday through Thursday nights from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. along US 6 between I-70 and CO 119.

“All motorists needing to get to Black Hawk or Central City during the full closures will need to access US 6 Clear Creek Canyon at the intersection of CO 93 and CO 58 to connect with CO 119,” according to CDOT.
