Cancer patient’s plea after thieves steal dog helping her recover from illness
A heartbroken dog owner has appealed for the return of her beloved pet dog which is helping her as she recovers from cancer after it was snatched by thieves.
The woman, who has asked not to be identified, has made an emotional appeal for the safe return of her black Labrador, Purdey, LeicesterLive reports.
The poor pet was taken from the woman's home near Billesdon Leicestershire, on Friday, February 19.
“She was given to me as a gift to help me recover from cancer,” she said.
“Because of this, we have developed an incredibly close bond. Our relationship is special and unique.
“I need her and she needs me. She needs to be home where she belongs.
“I am desperate to get her back. It is heartbreaking that anyone would take her away. I am heartbroken, devastated.
She said Purdey can be recognised by a ridge of hair on her nose and added: "I would plead with anyone who knows anything about this or where Purdey is to contact the police."
The theft has been reported to Leicestershire Police and officers have appealed for help tracing Purdey and bringing her back home.
A force spokeswoman said: “A black Labrador was stolen from a farm near to Billesdon overnight (18-19 February).
“Inquiries are ongoing to locate Purdey and we’d ask anyone who has seen it or knows of its whereabouts to come forward.”
According to police, dog thefts can often be linked to organised crime groups as a way of making money as the demand for dogs has significantly increased.
Advice from police:

- Make sure your dog is wearing a collar and ID tag when in a public place.
- Ensure your dog can be permanently identified by its microchip and check with your vet every year that details are up to date.
- Keep all documentation relating to your dog(s) in a safe place. Include clear photos of front and side profiles of your dog, making a note of any unusual markings.
