Brit tourist ‘raped by taxi driver in Crete after he took her to remote spot’

A British tourist has allegedly been raped in Crete by a taxi driver who took her to a remote location rather than her hotel.

The woman, in her 40s, told local police that she was assaulted in the town of Hersonissos on May 31 after being picked up from a bar.

She was holidaying on the Greek island with a friend.

She reportedly said that the taxi driver raped her in the back of his cab at an isolated spot on the island.

After the alleged attack she was taken to a nearby hospital and examined.

Greek news outlet Protothema reports that a 28-year-old man was arrested on June 2 and was released the following day, pending further investigation.

Authorities are yet to release any further details.

The accused man has reportedly denied the accusations from the moment he was arrested, instead insisting that the sex was fully consensual.

The report comes just weeks after another British tourist was allegedly raped while on holiday in Corfu.

The woman was said to be in a "bad condition" as she turned up to a local police station on the Greek island to make the report on May 14.

Police told The Sun that she was on holiday with her boyfriend at the time. She reported waking up after a night out to find a man on top of her.

She was said to give a person's description to detectives, who immediately began searches and arrested a 40-year-old man.

She identified him as the attacker, with police also saying that the accused worked at her hotel.

He denied rape and claimed he had sexual intercourse with the woman with her consent.

Foreign Office figures show at least 74 Brits reported being raped or sexually assaulted in Greece between 2016 and 2018.
