Bride and groom float to wedding in cooking pot through severely flooded streets
A couple sailed to their wedding in a cooking pot after heavy rains flooded the streets in the state of Kerala, India.
Footage shared on Twitter shows the bride and groom sitting inside the aluminium vessel while two men and a photographer waded through the submerged street on foot as they pushed them.
Newlyweds Akash and Aishwarya borrowed the pot from a local temple as it was “the only option” available at short notice, PTI reported.
Later, the pair arrived safe and dry at a small partially flooded temple in Thalavady where they exchanged floral garlands, a tradition in many Hindu wedding ceremonies.
Speaking to Asianet, the bride said: "It has turned into a wedding which we never imagined."
According to local media reports, the husband and wife are both healthcare workers at a hospital in Chengannur.
The couple were unwilling to postpone their big day despite flooding and landslides from heavy rainfall killing at least 27 people across the state.
The Twitter user sharing the footage said: "So this couple from Alappuzha district in Kerala used a large cooking vessel to wade through the floodwater to get to their wedding venue.
"Even the wedding venue was flooded, but fortunately, they managed to get married without missing the muhurtham time."
Images from the region showed cars and buses submerged as several homes were washed away in mud and debris.
Rescuers searched for survivors earlier this week as the army, navy and air force assisted with relief and rescue operations.
Sheeba George, the senior official in Idukki district, told local media that dozens of families had been evacuated and over 100 relief camps.
