Brazilian who ordered killing of girlfriend signs for new club

Brazilian footballer Bruno Fernandes de Souza who ordered the brutal murder of his mistress, before her body was disposed of in the most horrific circumstances imaginable, has been signed by a new club aged 38. Eliza Samudio, 25, an actress and model, was kidnapped, brutally beaten before being fed to dogs, and later asphyxiated by a gang which included a former policeman in June 2010.

Her body was chopped up and fed to dogs, with Fernandes de Souza – who had had an extramarital affair with Ms Samudio resulting in a child, which resulted in a paternity and child support lawsuit – later admitted organising the plot.

In 2013, he was handed a jail term of 22 years and three months after being convicted of ordering Ms Samudio’s murder, hiding her body, and also kidnapping their baby son.

Two years later Fernandes de Souza’s sentence was converted to allow him to work outside the prison during the day, while being required to return to the prison each night.

However, overcrowding at Varginha Prison resulted in officials permitting him to stay overnight at home, with the condition that he remained there between the hours of 8pm to 6am. He is allowed to play football again.

Fernandes de Souza, known in Brazil by his first name, was granted parole in January, with the sole condition that he checks in at the Penitentiary Administration Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro once every three months.

The former Atletico Mineiro, Corinthians, and Flamengo stopper has now been handed a contract by Sao Paulo’s Orion FC, which announced the signing on Instagram on March 22 by posting a picture of the him grinning and clenching his fist, together with the comment: “Backup for the position, welcome!”

However, not everyone was impressed with the decision, with one supporter commenting: “Total absurdity in women’s month, a month that should be exalting all of us women.”

Another added: “While we campaign against domestic violence in the field, do you guys make this hire? It sounds like a joke.”

However, a third suggested he had served his sentence, continuing: “By law, he owes nothing more.

“Will he be accountable to God by then? He has to work, right?”

The club is the seventh to have signed Bruno since 2017, when he was released on a legal technicality, before being ordered to return to jail three months later.

His last club was Atletico Carioca in Sao Goncalo, Rio de Janeiro State.
