A community is in shock today after a 12-year-old boy was attacked with a hammer in broad daylight in a public park.

The incident happened at Milking Bank Park in Dudley at around 5.45pm on Friday, May 7. It followed a fight between the victim and a 17-year old in nearby Sudeley Gardens earlier on that same day. The two incidents are believed to be connected.

The 12-year-old didn’t tell his parents about the horrifying attack until the following morning, at which point they took him to hospital and alerted police.

After examination by medics, the lad’s injuries were not thought to be serious.

Residents met near the scene of the attack to condemn the violence on Tuesday night, May 11.

One of those who attended, Colin Simms, told Birmingham Live: "It's disgusting to learn that minors cannot walk around a road without being abused and attacked, it’s important the law takes this very seriously and finds a way to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

"Just because people are free to move around now doesn’t mean anyone should have to look over their shoulder."

Video footage of the attack was reportedly circulating on social media but has now been removed.

A police statement yesterday read: "We are investigating after a 12-year-old boy was assaulted in Milking Bank Park, Dudley, on Friday evening, May 7.

"We were contacted the next day to report the boy had been attacked and hit with a hammer at around 5.45pm. Fortunately, his injuries were not serious.

"We believe the attack followed a fight between the boy and a 17-year-old youth a few minutes earlier in nearby Sudley Gardens."

"Our enquiries are continuing and anyone with any information is asked to message us via live chat at west-midlands.police.uk or call 101, quoting crime reference number 20/675865/21.

"Or to tell us what you know, not who you are, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A spokesman for West Midlands Police told the Daily Star that enquiries are ongoing and no arrests have as yet been made.
