In his second televised statement about the coronavirus crisis in as many days, Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the nation: "We know how crucial it is to keep children in schools so let's all make sure our children and young people are vaccinated before they go back next term".
He urged people to wear face masks wherever pit's practical, to make sure public spaces are well-ventilated and to get tested if they're going to an event with lots of people or meeting vulnerable relatives.
He added that the Royal Mail would be doubling home deliveries of testing kits to 900,000 a day from Saturday.
"We're jabbing in shopping centres, and in high streets and in football stadiums," he insisted – mentioning Chelsea's Stamford Bridge as well as Wembley.
"We're throwing everything at it."
A record 78,610 new Covid-19 infections has been reported as the Omicron variant has driven the spread of another wave of the virus and many believe that schools have been at the heart of the outbreak.
England’s chief medical officer Chris Whitty has warned that more Covid records are going to be broken in the coming weeks, adding that the number of infections is rising "very fast" because the Delta variant is not fading away, but being "built on" by the Omicron mutation.
He described the Delta and Omicron outbreaks as "two separate epidemics".
