55st man who blocked 4 beds and cost NHS £800k FINALLY leaves hospital after a year – The Sun
A FIFTY-FIVE stone man who cost the NHS up to £800,000 by taking up four hospital beds for 19 months has finally been discharged.
Matthew Crawford was admitted with sepsis in May last year. After five months — by October 2018 — he was medically fit to leave.
Mr Crawford, who used to live in Lincoln, made headlines last year after taking up a four-bed bay to fit his 55-stone frame in Kings Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts.
The 33-year-old has in total spent 19 months at Kings Mill Hospital, where his reinforced bed costs £7,000 a week.
Despite being well enough to leave, staff couldn't kick him out because there was no suitable social care space for him.
But now, a year on, it has been revealed he has finally moved to a "more appropriate setting."
BED BLOCKER
A spokesperson for Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust said on Wednesday: "While we are not able to comment on the care of individual patients for reasons of confidentiality, we can confirm that Mr Crawford is no longer in the care of Sherwood Forest Hospitals.
"We are pleased for all concerned that he is now in a more appropriate setting."
It was revealed last year that Mr Crawford's reinforced beds were costing the NHS a whopping £7,000 a week.
He was first taken into King's Mill Hospital in May 2018 – and there were fears that he would still be in there this Christmas.
But with the revelation that he left this week – the total number he cost the NHS during his time at the hospital racks up to £532,000.
FINALLY LEFT
Mr Crawford himself confirmed he had let hospital on his Facebook page on Tuesday, according to Lincolnshire Live.
While the man was still in the hospital, it was revealed that other patients were being turned away because of the space he was taking up.
Sources also said that while in hospital, Mr Crawford regularly ordered Chinese takeaways and pizza to the ward.

At the time, Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust said: “It is disappointing when despite all our efforts we still have patients in hospital who we recognise should not be here.
"It means there are less beds available for those needing hospital treatment."
Crawford was also convicted of assaulting four nurses at a care home last year, while he was criticised for splurging his £650-a-month Employment Support Allowance on takeaways.
