The TV star sparked a huge backlash after blaming Brexit for some of the supply issues faced in the UK. The 75-year-old released a video on the Twitter page of the Labour Movement for Europe and claimed the “chickens are coming home to roost” for the Brexit-backing Prime Minister.

In the clip, Sir Tony gave examples of supermarket shelves being bare, a shortage in the Labour market and claimed border crossing have become a “nightmare”.

The political activist noted the pandemic had an impact, but refused to acknowledge most of the problems were not a direct result of Brexit and were also being experienced elsewhere around the world.

The decision to pin most of the blame on the UK leaving the EU has triggered a furious reaction from a number of Express.co.uk readers and many let their opinions known in the comments section of a previous story.

Rharris75 said: “I am sorry Tony but you are pulling on ropes that have nothing at the other end of them.

“Brexit is quite simply not the main cause of current issues, Covid, Russia and the media are the main drivers behinds the so called fuel, gas, supply issues.”

Minotaurus said: “I never thought it possible, but I’m even more pro-Brexit now than in 2016.

“Keep those insults coming, desperado Remainers! Brexit will win and I, for one, am in for the long haul against the anti-UK mob.”

Justintime21 added: “Who cares what you think, we voted, you lost, we left, end off.”

Meanwhile, Warwickmaiden simply said: “I have a cunning plan… why don’t we just ignore him!”

Britain is currently facing a shortage of around 100,000 lorry drivers, according to estimates by the Road Haulage Association.

The lack of HGV drivers has had a knock-on effect on UK businesses and has contributed to a shortage of some supermarket supplies and disrupted fuel deliveries to petrol stations.

Labour market issues are also being felt across Europe as many hauliers decided to return to their home nations during the Covid crisis.

Many have faced difficulties returning to their old work places due to ongoing coronavirus travel restrictions, while others have left the profession all together.

The Government has attempted to ease the problem by making 50,000 HGV tests available and introducing 5,000 short-term visas for EU hauliers.

The intervention by Sir Tony came as Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer addressed Brexit at the party conference on Wednesday.

Sir Keir, who previously pushed for a second EU referendum when he was shadow Brexit secretary, introduced a new three-word slogan and told Boris Johnson he must “make Brexit work”.

In his video, Sir Tony claimed it was now time to return to a “pro-European vision”.

He said: “If you’re anything like I am then you haven’t been arguing the anti-Brexit case nearly as passionately recently as you used to. I think that’s fair enough, it’s partly because of Covid and partly because people were generally fed up with talking about Brexit.

“But I think there’s been a seat change, I think Johnson’s chickens are coming home to roost.

“There’s less and less food on the supermarket shelves, anyone who has anything to do with catering, the hospitality industry and lots of other industries know its nearly impossible to find enough people to run them.

“Anything to do with border crossings is a nightmare, we know why that is.

“It’s time for us to start arguing once again the pro-European vision we have for the future.”
