Westminster on lockdown with Downing Street closed off over suspect package

Downing Street has been closed off to the public as emergency services scramble to the scene. According to witnesses at the scene, an evacuation is underway following the discovery of a suspicious package on Whitehall. Road closures are in place but are expected to be lifted after police determined the package to not be suspicious.

City of Westminster Police tweeted: “The item has been assessed as not suspicious and road closures are being lifted.”

They were called at 12:13pm on Wednesday and remain in the area.
