Appearing on France24 Alyn Smith, the SNP MP for Stirling called on the “international audience” to recognise Scotland as “progressive” and support a second Scottish independence referendum. He drew parrallels between Scotland and Germany’s voting system and insisted the SNP are “democrats” in a promotion of a Scottish IndyRef2. His comments come despite the SNP falling one short of a majority in the Scottish parliament elections earlier this month.

The MP was asked if the latest SNP election results, which sees the nationalists short of a majority by one seat in the Scottish parliament, give the SNP a mandate for a second Scottish independence referendum.

Mr Smith replied: “Yes it does, and one short of a majority yes.

“But it is really important for an international audience to know that the Scottish Parliament has a progressive voting system.”

He added: “We use the same system as the Deutsche Bundestag that ensures a proportionality of the votes.”

The SNP MP for Stirling went on saying: “We are a pro-Independene party obviously.

“We put that before the people in our manifesto.”

Mr Smith explained how the SNP’s alliance with the pro-Independence Scottish Greens is good news for a second independence referendum.

He said: “the Greens are a considerable force within Scottish politics…. we have an overall majority in favour of a referendum.”

And in a further bid to convince viewers of an independent Scotland, Mr Smith insisted the SNP are “democrats”.

The Scot said: “And we are democrats and we have a clear situation where the parties that are in favour of a referendum won.

“So it is a question of when we have that referendum, not if.”

Also appearing on the panel was Conservative Scottish Parliament member  Dean Lockhart who hit back at Smith’s claims.

Mr Lockhart said: “Well… we did that (a referendum) in 2014 and it was an overwhelming vote… the biggest ever democratic exercise Scotland has ever had.”

“Two million people in Scotland voted to remain part of the UK – it was a 55/45 percent majority.

“The Scottish National Party agreed it would be a once in a generation event, which it should be.”

He concluded: “We are a parliamentary democracy. We don’t run things by referendum!”
