Sir Lindsay Hoyle reminded Boris Johnson that it was Prime Minister’s Questions and not Opposition questions after the Conservative leader attempted to grill Sir Keir Starmer. Just minutes after his first warning to the Prime Minister, the Speaker issued another one after Boris attempted to ask the Labour Party leader another question.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle said following a clash between Boris and Sir Keir: “Maybe I can help a little, just to remind us, it is Prime Minister’s Questions.
“If we want Opposition questions we will have to change the standing order.”
The Speaker stated during his second warning: “Once again it is Prime Minister’s Questions.
“And it is the Prime Minister [that] answers questions.”
Following Sir Lindsay’s second interjection, Sir Keir Starmer took the opportunity to fire a dig at Boris in response to his question.
Sir Keir said: “If he stopped mumbling and listened he would have heard the answer the first time.”
The Speaker and Boris Johnson have clashed on a number of occasions in recent months.
Last month, the Speaker of the House of Commons has unleashed a furious warning to Boris Johnson and branded his statement on the UK’s Covid restrictions as “unacceptable” and “disrespectful”.
Boris Johnson: Sir Lindsay Hoyle hits out at PM
Sir Lindsay Hoyle was visibly furious that Boris Johnson had chosen to give his statement regarding the UK Government’s decision not to relax all coronavirus restrictions on June 21 at a press briefing rather than in the House of Commons.
The Speaker warned the Prime Minister that he will be watching him in the future.
Sir Lindsay said: “It is entirely unacceptable the Government did not make today’s statement announcement to the house first.
“It was disrespectful to our house and to our constituency.
“I want to say very clearly to the Government that this is not how this house should be treated.”
He continued: “This house can be assured that I will be pursuing this matter with him.
“I do not find it acceptable at all, members of this house are elected to come here and serve their constituency not to serve them via Sky and BBC.
“The Prime Minister should be here, I am sorry if his dinner would have been affected.
“I was told he was in Brussels, I think the nearest Brussels tonight were the sprouts on his plate at the dinner being served.
“I say now Prime Minister, you are on my watch and I want you to treat this house correctly.”
