Austin Murphy of Wakefield CLP took to the stage at the Labour Party conference and took his opportunity to slam the chair for their “shameful management” of speakers. He noted on Sunday there were many speakers who discussed housing and transport, causing the event to overrun by around an hour. Mr Murphy then compared it to Monday where several Palestine speakers were forced to be cut in what he claims is a deliberate attempt to “curtail” the debate.

CLP members were invited on stage to deliver points of order and were given a short amount of time to deliver their speeches.

But Mr Murphy took his opportunity to slam the panel in charge of the speakers and took aim at Angela Eagle who was the chair.

He told the packed hall: “I’m coming up here to protest and complain about the chair both today and yesterday and the running of the conference.

“Yesterday, there were over 20 speakers on the housing and transport motions and we overran for over an hour.

“Today, the chair has deliberately curtailed speakers to four speakers, four speakers of Palestine debates which they deliberately want to curtail…”

The hall began loudly cheering as Mr Murphy raised his voice.

He continued: “This is shameful management by the chair and the curtailing of debate and democracy within this party, and it is shameful.”

The hall continued to cheer as Ms Eagle attempted to calm everyone down.

Rachel Reeves discusses Labour's plans for tax reliefs

She responded: “Thank you, I appreciate that it’s very difficult but I’ve got to try and stick to the time the conference arrangement committee has given me.

“We’re already running well over time and I would have liked to call more speakers.”

Deputy leader Angela Rayner stole the focus at the Labour Party conference after audio emerged of her calling Tories “scum”, “homophobic”, and “racist” in a foul-mouthed rant during a fringe event.

She was reported as saying: “I’m sick of shouting from the sidelines, and I bet youse lot are too.

“We cannot get any worse than a bunch of scum, homophobic, racist, misogynistic, absolute pile… banana republic… Etonian… piece of scum… and I held back a little… that I have ever seen in my life.”

Her comments have caused an outcry with some prominent Labour members appearing to stand by Ms Rayner.

Several prominent Labour figures, such as Sir Keir Starmer, Rachel Reeve and Lucy Powell, have all said it would be language they would “not use”.

Labour members have also taken issue with media figures appearing at the conference with some reportedly angry GB News has been given a stall.

Delegates were also heard booing during discussions of the Sun Newspaper which has been banned from Labour conferences since 2016.

The Labour conference has often been a hostile place for journalists to work at with BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg requiring a bodyguard in 2017.
