Dr Rosena Allin-Khan shared a picture on social media of a nurse from Spain dressed in a bin bag due to a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE). The shadow minister, who still occasionally works A&E shifts at NHS hospitals herself, sent the tweet yesterday afternoon.
The image was used by the MP as she criticised the Government for failing to ensure workers in the NHS had the PPE they needed to protect them from COVID-19.
She accused ministers of “cronyism”, saying friends of the Government were being cared for during the pandemic while frontline workers were not.
Her comments came after it emerged businesses that had contacts to ministers were 10 times more likely to be awarded a contract to supply PPE equipment.
In a post accompanying the picture, the Tooting MP wrote on social media yesterday: “If you’ve got the Health Secretary on WhatsApp, you get a PPE contract.
“If you’re a nurse working on the frontline, you get a bin bag.
“Profiteering, cronyism and shameful incompetence.”
The post has since been deleted after dozens of people highlighted the error to Dr Allin-Khan.
The social media post was met with anger for sharing misleading information.
Conservative MPs accused the shadow minister of being “dishonest” and have urged her to apologise.
It comes after Dr Allin-Khan was forced to issue a statement earlier this year apologising for sharing false information after accusing Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi of skipping the queue for a Covid jab.

Sharing the unfounded allegation she said “there are millions of vulnerable people waiting patiently in the queue”.
The tweet was later deleted and the MP said she was sorry for causing a social media “pile on”.
Dr Allin-Khan said: “I regret sharing unsubstantiated claims about the minister and I apologise to him and his family.”
Following the Labour MP’s latest social media blunder, Conservative MP for Rutland and Melton, Alicia Kearns, said: “First she tweets outright lies about the Vaccines’ Minister & his family, now she posts pictures of clinicians in Spain to try & attack our Health Secretary.
“It would be dishonest to imply this is a UK clinician.
“I’m sure an apology will be forthcoming for any potential confusion.”
Middlesborough South MP Simon Clarke added Dr Allin-Khan “has a habit of tweets that misrepresent the facts”.
Admitting her error, Dr Allin-Khan said “a previous tweet had the wrong picture”.
