Chancellor Mr Sunak has been leading the UK’s economic response to the coronavirus pandemic and this week announced the budget to get Britain back onto the road to recovery. International Trade Secretary Ms Truss has been tasked with striking post-Brexit trade deals and has already reached more than 60 agreements with nations around the world.

Ms Truss is earning a reputation as shrewd negotiator and is currently eyeing an ambitious trade deal with China which one expert estimates could be worth up to £80billion.

She has already sewn up deals worth more than £200billion with third countries around the world since Britain left the EU and was asked about the prospect of striking an agreement with Beijing during a webinar organised by the Conservative Home website this week.

She indicated that while an agreement was possible, Britain and the West would not overlook the plight of the Uighurs in the west of the country or draconian new laws in Hong Kong but suggested a “clear-eyed” approach to the communist superpower’s human rights record had the potential to yield results.

And her growing popularity was echoed in an exclusive Express.co.uk survey which asked readers if they thought Ms Truss or Mr Sunak would make the best Prime Minister.

The poll found 54 percent (897 people) thought Ms Truss would be a better leader with 39 percent (608 readers) opting for Mr Sunak and 7 percent (114 people) saying they didn’t know.

A total of 1,619 readers took part in the online survey which ran from 3pm until 9pm on Sunday March 7 2021.

One reader said: “Liz Truss. She is amazing, quiet, confident and gets the job done.”

Another said: “They both have great strengths. Truss is dynamic and Sunak is a pair of financially sound hands.

“That decision needs to be made nearer the time, when the UKs needs can be better evaluated.

“What we need to remember is that these are members of the Boris Team, you remember, the one everyone derided?

“We are lucky to have both of them and we have Boris to thank for that.

“The war isn’t over yet. If the electorate are determined to do a Churchill on Boris, now is far too early, and we have two major distractions in Westminster, we don’t need third.”
