Pro-Brexit Tory MPs have praised Lord Frost for finding a way through the hard-line stance from the European Union in negotiations and forcing them to compromise on their firmly-held red lines. Influential backbenchers and former ministers have praised the UK’s Brexit minister for once again persuading the EU to commit to rejoining the negotiating table. Last week, Lord Frost proposed to make changes to the Northern Ireland Protocol following weeks of rows over the implementation of the Brexit mechanism with the EU.

These requests included a “standstill” in the legal action being taken by the European Commission against the UK for claims of breaching the agreed terms of the Protocol earlier this year.

The European Commission initially flat-out rejected the proposals but on Wednesday appeared to loosen their stance on the matter.

Tory MPs have now piled praise onto Lord Frost for picking holes in the EU’s negotiating strategy following the apparent U-turn from Brussels, undermining their image for being hard to break down.

Now Britons have echoed those comments, now urging Prime Minister Boris Johnson to take the next step and trigger Article 16 – a move they claim would send widespread panic throughout the bloc.

Reacting to our initial story, one Express.co.uk reader said: “The only way to beat the EU is to walk away and let their panic begin to start.”

A second person beamed: “Stand up to a bully and it will always back down.

“Now for step two Boris – trigger Article 16, then step three, WTO, then step four, CPTPP.”

Another reader commented: “EU, classic, cowardly school-yard bullies. Good work Frost.”

A fourth person added: “The EU clearly wants to avoid a court case it knows it cannot win.”

Last week, the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen rejected the proposals from Lord Frost to change parts of the Protocol, warning: “The EU will continue to be creative and flexible within the Protocol framework. But we will not renegotiate.”

But on Wednesday, the EU edged towards making a U-turn, with a Commission spokeswoman saying: “The Commission will carefully assess the new proposals made by the UK, in accordance with the necessary consultation procedures, both internally, and with the European Parliament.”

Several Tory pro-Brexit MPs have rushed to praise the negotiating tactics employed by Lord Frost.

North West Leicestershire MP Andrew Bridgen told Express.co.uk: “They said they would never re-open the withdrawal agreement, they did; they said they would never re-open the Brexit deal, they did; and they’re doing it again.

“Lord Frost has done an excellent job for us in negotiating with a difficult, extremely bitter former partner, and he’s got a strategy that is proven to get the best deal for the UK and it’s holding our ground.”

Another MP said: “What this shows is a repeat of the way the EU has behaved in the past.

“They refused to reopen the withdrawal agreement, said it was impossible to reopen the withdrawal agreement, and then they did.

“They did it because the Prime Minister stood up to them and because Lord Frost stood up to them representing the UK’s interests, they backed down and are now coming to the negotiation table.

“If you stand up to the EU they will back down.”

The MP added: “It’s the same old EU tactics, say you can’t do something, can’t do something, can’t do something, and then at the very last minute when they realise you won’t budge, they can suddenly be flexible.”
