Lee Anderson demands Labour condemn EU diplomat’s ‘appalling’ attack on Israel
Moment Israel launches air strikes on Islamic University in Gaza
The EU’s foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell has “again proven Brexit was right” after he condemned Israel’s actions in defending itself against shocking terrorist attacks, top Tories have said.
Following the slaughter of more than 1,000 Israelis and the injury and kidnapping of hundreds more Israel has attacked Hamas positions in Gaza City where the Palestinian terrorists launched their bloodthirsty attacks.
But despite news of Israeli babies being beheaded by the Palestinian terrorists and children being burnt alive as well as accounts of Hamas terrorists raping women and children, Mr Borrell chose to condemn Israel for its siege of Gaza.
Visiting Oman on Tuesday, he said: “Israel has a right to self-defence, but it has to be done within international law … cutting water, cutting electricity, cutting food to a mass of civilian people is against international law.”
Brexiteer Conservatives have described the comments as “appalling” and insisted that it has proven why Britain needed to leave the EU and ensure its own independent foreign policy.

Conservative Deputy Chairman Lee Anderson warned that this could see the UK supporting “appalling” comments and policies such as the one made by Borrell and he challenged Labour to condemn him.
Mr Anderson told Express.co.uk: “We didn’t need any more reasons to be glad we left the EU, but their top diplomat has just given us another one.
“The question for Labour is this: they don’t want to diverge from the EU on anything, so would they condemn these appalling comments?”
Chairman of the European Research Group (ERG) of Conservative Brexiteer MPs Mark Francois said that the statement by Borrell contrasted starkly with the support offered to Israel by British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who touched down in Israel today.
Mr Francois said: “Thanks to Brexit, Mr Borrell, the EU’s so-called Foreign Affairs Chief, no longer speaks in any way for Britain’s Government, which has forcefully condemned Hamas’s terrorist assault on Israel – and dispatched our own Foreign Secretary to Israel today, to personally demonstrate our support.
“The EU’s perennially naive attitude to Hamas – which has not held an election in Gaza since 2007 – is now illustrated yet again. Thank goodness these people don’t speak for us.”

This week at Labour’s conference in Liverpool, Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy raised eyebrows by attending a pro-Palestine event with the conference also hosting anti-Israel fringe meetings.
While Lammy and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer publicly condemned the Hamas attack and supported Israel’s right to defend itself, there were also concerns that the Shadow Foreign Secretary also suggested the party would tie Britain to EU defence and foreign policy in government.
Mr Lammy followed on promises made by Starmer “not to diverge from the EU” economically by saying he would join a security pact which many see as the start of an EU army.
There have already been concerns that four countries including Ireland have slowed down attempts by the EU to stop sending money to the Palestinians which could be used by Hamas to fund their continued terror attacks.
