The International Trade Secretary said Britain is a “low-tax, high-talent, innovation nation”, making it attractive for firms to come here. On her first overseas visit in the role she also hailed the “special relationship” between the UK and the US.

Speaking at the Atlantic Future Forum of political, business and military leaders, Ms Badenoch said: “The US is our single most important trade, defence and security partner. We share the same values – freedom, free trade and the rule of law.

“Together we are a force for progress as we face down countries who threaten these values. The UK is a low-tax, high-talent, innovation nation and I will show America’s biggest companies that we are ready to be their investment partner of choice.”

The visit comes days after Liz Truss admitted that a post-Brexit free trade deal with the US may be out of reach for years.

The fifth annual forum took place aboard aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth in New York.

Ms Badenoch will likely use the visit to promote the UK as a defence and tech superpower.

And she will also be highlighting the benefits of state-level trade deals following agreements with Indiana and North Carolina.
