Tony Miklinski told Express.co.uk that the Labour Party will never be in power in the UK again without resurrecting their power base in Scotland. The Scottish Conservative councillor added that without a clear policy on Scottish independence the Scottish Labour Party will suffer in the upcoming Holyrood election in May 2021.
Mr Miklinski said: “I don’t know as I sit here which of the statements from Keir Starmer or anybody else constitutes Labour’s position on independence.
“Are they for it? Are they against it? Is it up to the Scottish people if they want it? I have heard variations of that theme.
“Labour is in a desperate position, Labour will never be in power again in the UK if they cannot get back their power base in Scotland.
“How do they do that? Do they do it by pandering to the nationalists and being warm towards independence?
“Or do they oppose it and become part of the unionist movement?
“I don’t think they know, I think they are scratching around under Keir Starmer, I don’t think he has really thought through the implications of what he is trying to do with Scotland.”
He continued: “I expect Labour to suffer more so than they did at the last election.
“They really are a spent force, I see it on a daily basis, they are split.
Keir Starmer says he would 'downsize the monarchy' in 2020
“So unless Keir Starmer can exert some control and get a clear policy in the next three months then I think they are destined to be wiped out.”
Sir Keir Starmer has previously stated at his party will fail at the 2024 general election without a revival of its fortunes in Scotland.
He said: “We have to win in 2024.
“There’s no way through without going through Scotland. Scotland really matters.

“And, of course, that is going to be tested very significantly in May of next year when we have the Scottish elections.
“I think that involves rebuilding trust which we have lost in parts of Scotland.
“I don’t think the values of people in Scotland have changed, I think it’s trust in the Labour Party that has gone. And we need to rebuild and rebuild quickly.”
Labour held just one Scottish seat in the December 2019 general election.
