Conservative MP Richard Holden has warned Sir Keir Starmer that Labour “has nothing to say” to the patriotic voters in northern “red wall” seats like his own. Mr Holden told Express.co.uk that his constituents were “proud of Britain” and were put off by Labour’s “far-left” message and lack of patriotism. It comes as Sir Keir looks set to be heading to another by-election defeat with his party looking likely to lose the seat of Batley and Spen.

The MP for North West Durham told Express.co.uk: “Keir Starmer has clearly got views which are totally anathema to most of my constituents.

“My constituents I think overwhelming support the Queen and what she has done for our country over its almost seven decades now on the throne.

“I think that my constituents are generally very strong patriots.

“We have got a great association with organisations like the Durham light infantry, now the Rifles Regiment.

“You know propertied in really deeply engrained love of this country.

“And I think you know it is difficult for Starmer because he does not believe what they believe.”

He added: “He is the third Labour leader in a row to come from within half a dozen tube stops of each other in central London.

“Miliband is actually one of Keir Starmer’s constituents and Jeremy Corbyn from the neighbouring constituency.”

“All in that inner London far left belt and I think that they have a real difficulty connecting outside of those inner London constituencies.

“Because they have never been interested in place outside those areas.”

Mr Holden argued: “Traditional patriotic Labour voters who get the need for a balanced economy, who want to see work pay more, who don’t want to see massive tax rises.

“Who get the need for balance, who also are proud of Britain, a lot of them would have voted to leave the European Union as well, those people Labour has nothing to say to them.”

It comes as Labour suffered its worst-ever by-election result since after devastating outcome in Chesham and Amersham.

“I make this the worst labour performance in any by-election,”  Polling guru John Curtice told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“Frankly, many a Labour voter, who of course many of them will be Remain voters, are quite happy to switch to the Liberal Democrats because the Liberal Democrats actually persuaded them they had a chance of defeating the Conservatives in this constituency.

“So in a sense, it’s an indication for Labour that their connection with their electorate is certainly not that strong.”
