Keir Starmer said the Labour will be able to focus on core policies now division within the party has been curtailed. Sir Keir faced major opposition from far-left fringes for his plans to reposition the party’s stance to a more moderate position. But Good Morning Britain presenter Ben Shephard questioned his assessment about the state of the party and insisted there is still a “long way to go” before unity is achieved.
Mr Shephard said: “You say that you got your house in order but I think you’ve got a long way to go to sort that out, haven’t you?
“One of the things you were campaigning for in your leadership campaign was the £15 minimum wage.
“You’ve gone back on yourself now, so much so that one of your shadow frontbench colleagues, Andy McDonald, has resigned because of this.
“He refuses to argue against the idea of a £15 minimum wage. That’s something you campaigned on to be called leader. And you changed your mind.”
Sir Keir entered conference season facing a backlash over proposed changes to leadership election rules, but was forced to present a watered-down version of the plan.
And on Monday, shadow Employment Rights Secretary Andy McDonald quit the shadow Cabinet in opposition to Sir Keir’s failure to support plans for a £15 minimum wage.
