Tory MP John Redwood revealed he “did not think” Boris Johnson has come to a decision on lockdown extension, following weeks of speculation the June 21 unlocking date will be pushed back. Speaking to talkRADIO the MP for Wokingham told listeners a decision must be reached with the cabinet before a decision is made. Boris Johnson is due to address the nation on Monday in relation to the June 21 date, but Mr Redwood warned that a “compromise” package could be agreed whereby certain aspects of coronavirus restrictions continue but full easing is avoided.

Mr Redmond said: “I don’t think Boris Johnson has come to a conclusion yet.

“I read all these stories that he has already decided to go for a four week continued lockdown at the current level…”

But host Patrick Christy’s interjected saying: “There can’t be any smoke without fire, I mean it’s absolutely everywhere.

“If lockdown easing are not delayed now it would be amazing.”

Redwood replied: “I am telling you the truth as I see it – I believe the Prime Minister has been mainly preoccupied this week by other issues at the G7.

“He will do exactly what he has promised to do which is to come back to London, study the data, talk to the senior officials and consult the cabinet.

“Because in the end it has to be a cabinet decision of the whole government.

“And I think what they will do is go into a bit more detail.”

Lockdown: Expert warns of ‘substantial third wave’

The MP for Wokingham added: “I think there is a whole menu of things that you could relax or you could continue with no relaxation and so there are options between the two extremes.”

He then went on to specualte at what sort of measures could be placed on Britons if the lockdown was extended.

Mr Redwood suggested: “It might not be a decision to carry on with all the current controls for another four weeks which is what most advisors want.

“And it may not be what others of us would like which is to say ‘June 21st is freedom day’ everything goes.”

He added: “They might come up with a compromise package of things you’re allowed to do in the future you can’t do at the moment.

Mr Redwood argued “that would be better in my view than just having another four weeks of delay”.

The Prime Minister is due to make an annoucement on June 21 lockdown easing date on Monday as many predict there will be a four-week extension to coronavirus restrictions.

The possible push back of ‘Freedom Day’ comes as concerns rise around the rise in infections of the Indian Variant, which scientists argue a four-week extension would combat as it would allow all over-50’s to be fully jabbed and the vaccine to take effect.
