Sajid Javid appeared on Sky News to discuss the delay to the plans addressing the NHS backlog but was asked whether Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s remarks about Jimmy Savile were right. Host Kay Burley played a series of clips to Mr Javid of the comments and subsequent reactions from cabinet ministers, including from the Health Secretary himself, and demanded to know whether Mr Johnson should have made the comments. But Mr Javid defended his boss and requested producers to play clips of Mr Johnson “clarifying” his comments as Ms Burley kindly reminded him it was her show not his.

Speaking on Sky News, Mr Javid was invited to discuss the NHS backlogs but Ms Burley capitalised on the moment to discuss the fractures within Downing Street.

Ms Burley pointed out that aide Munira Mirza stepped down as a direct response to the comment with several other Conservative allies voicing their strong opposition to the comments.

Mr Javid was shown the clip of Mr Johnson attacking Sir Keir Starmer during PMQs who said: “The leader of the opposition, a former director of public prosecutions.

“He spent most of his time prosecuting journalists and failing to prosecute Jimmy Savile.”

Ms Burley branded it “outrageous” with Mr Javid responding: “Well, I don’t know if you have the clip from a couple of days later where the Prime Minister did clarify his remarks…”
