Diane Abbott embarrassingly fact checked over post attacking Suella Braverman
Suella Braverman sacked as Home Secretary
Diane Abbott has been fact-checked over a post attacking Suella Braverman on social media platform X.
The Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP, who currently sits as an independent, on Saturday shared a picture of a protester showing his Nazi swastika tattoo while wearing a poppy.
In reference to comments Mrs Braverman made criticising a pro-Palestine protest on Remembrance Day, Ms Abbott said: “Suella says: ‘Decent British people have had enough of these displays of thuggish intimidation and extremism.’
“Does she mean guys like this one out today?”
But the former Shadow Home Secretary has been fact-checked by other users on X, formerly Twitter.
They pointed out that the picture of the demonstrator was taken in 2016, rather than last Saturday when far-right counter-protesters turned out in London along with the pro-Palestine march.
GB News presenter and ex-Brexit Party MEP Martin Daubney shared Ms Abbott’s post.
He said: “Oh dear, Diane Abbott attributes a photo from 2016 to this weekend’s Armistice Day protest. Who’s spreading the ‘hate’ now?”
There were ugly scenes on Saturday when far-right counter-protesters took to the streets of the capital as Palestine supporters also took part in a rally calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
In her post which has been fact-checked, Ms Abbott had been quoting remarks by Mrs Braverman on X on November 6.
The senior Conservative MP said: “The hate marchers need to understand that decent British people have had enough of these displays of thuggish intimidation and extremism.”
Mrs Braverman was sacked as Home Secretary in Rishi Sunak’s reshuffle yesterday following controversy over an article she wrote criticising the policing of pro-Palestine protests.
