Last week saw the Government rocked by five high profile resignations in the space of 24 hours. While Mr Johnson’s spokesman told reporters that three of the resignations – Jack Doyle, Dan Rosenfield and Martin Reynolds – had come as a result of “mutual decisions”, the departure of head of policy Munira Mirza and policy adviser Elena Narozanski had not been planned, and marked a further sign that the PM’s Government may be losing faith in him.

However, the new replacements have been described as part of a relaunched No. 10.

Guto Harri has been appointed as the new director of communications, while MP Steve Barclay took up the role of chief of staff and MP Andrew Griffith became head of the PM’s policy unit.

As the result of the Met police’s investigation into alleged lockdown-breaking Downing Street parties looms, and reports of letters of no confidence being sent mount up, a relaunched Government may be just what Mr Johnson needs to bring his leadership back from the brink.

Questions have been raised about Mr Harri’s links with the controversial Chinese company Huawei after it emerged he allegedly lobbied on behalf of the tech firm.

He also raised eyebrows after reportedly taking a six-month leave of absence from his former employer to take on the No10 role, leading to speculation about how long the Prime Minister would remain in post. He then resigned from his position at Hawthorn Advisers.

On Monday, in an interview with a Welsh language news website Golwg360, Mr Harri said he and Mr Johnson burst into a rendition of Gloria Gaynor’s “I will Survive” after being reunited, inviting ridicule.

Himself a former member of Mr Johnson’s No. 10 staff, Mr Cummings compared his new Government staffing to 2015’s Remain campaign.

He tweeted: “This No10 relaunch is going as well as the launch of the ‘BSE’ (i.e Remain) campaign in 2015…”

The remark will likely sting for Mr Johnson, whose role in the successful Vote Leave campaign and stance on Brexit since played a key role in securing his election in 2019.

The reference to the Brexit referendum also draws attention to Mr Cummings’ own success in leading the Leave campaign to achieve victory in the referendum.

His key role even saw him played by Benedict Cumberbatch as the main character in the Channel 4 drama The Uncivil War about the referendum campaign.

However, Mr Cummings resigned from his position as the PM’s chief aide in November 2020. While he had initially planned to stay until the end of the year, the BBC reported Mr Cummings’ departure had been brought forward given the “upset in the team” and that Mr Johnson wanted to “clear the air and move on”.

As reported in the Telegraph, Mr Cummings reportedly briefing staff against Mr Johnson, accusing him of being “indecisive”.

Since his exit from Downing Street, Mr Cummings has used his online blog and Twitter account to repeatedly rail against Mr Johnson’s leadership.

Most recently this has come in the form of an attack on the recent relaunch of No. 10.

On the appointment of Mr Barclay to chief of staff, Mr Cummings said: “Message from No10: ‘So our new boss is a pro-Remain lobbyist who’s said the PM is ‘sexually incontinent’, ‘hugely divisive’, ‘destructive’, ‘dragging the country down’, & picked ‘wrong side’ in referendum’ GREAT.”

Meanwhile, regarding Mr Harri’s new job, Mr Cummings said: “Mr Johnson had appointed “clowns like Huawei Hari who accelerate the destruction of your position, and do dumb s*** like ramp up fights in media that you need to go away and self-promoting moronic interviews broadcasting the message ‘the reset is a clown show’.”
