Nicola Sturgeon received a grilling from her election opponent, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, when he was allowed to cross-examine her during a live debate. The First Minister was confronted over serious failings in the opening of Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, which resulted in infections in patients. The SNP leader tried to defend herself and her party against the accusations of poor leadership.
Mr Sarwar said: “You were the Health Secretary when the Queen Elizabeth University hospital was commissioned and First Minister when it was opened.
“The week before that hospital was opened you received a report to say the hospital was not safe and it was a high risk to infections. But the hospital was opened anyway.
“That resulted in over 40 infections in child cancer patients. And tragically the death of two children.
“That hospital should never have been allowed to open. Why was that report ignored?”
Ms Sturgeon shot back: “Well, can I say that this is a really important issue and my deepest condolences go out to the families of the children who were affected there.
“But it is not the case that the reports I personally saw said the hospitals were unsafe.
“That is simply not the case, What we have done is taken steps to ensure and rectify…”
At this point, Mr Sarwar interrupted to state that “six years had passed”.
SNP ‘blinded’ by desire for independence says Sarwar
He added: “And you still do not know the answer.”
Ms Sturgeon insisted: “We had an exchange a couple of weeks ago.
“Detailed work has been done and that has been published. Detailed work has been done on individual cases.”
