British fishermen have said they are struggling to make ends meet because the price of fish has plummeted by a third. They have claimed firms in France, Spain and Italy are refusing to pay normal prices because Brexit red tape means the fish isn’t as fresh. The news has sparked fury from Express.co.uk readers, as trawlermen are facing huge losses despite securing record catches.

Fisherman Luke Selvey recently returned to Brixham harbour in Devon aboard beam trawler Emilia Jayne.

Mr Selvey said: “We’ve got cuttlefish, Dover sole, brill, turbot, monks … all sorts.

“The fishing is the best we’ve seen for years.

“The problem we’ve got is that the price of the fish is terrible. It’s making things really, really difficult for us.”

Mr Selvey told the Guardian the value of his catch had fallen from an expected £26,000 to just £16,000.

He said cuttlefish would usually fetch about £4.50 a kg but this year the price has been as low as £1.80.

Similarly, Dover sole has dropped from about £15 to £7, and plaice from £3 to £1.10.

Express.co.uk readers have heavily criticised EU member states for slashing prices, with several callers calling on the Government to issue a blanket ban on EU trawlers accessing British waters.

One person wrote: “There is a very easy solution to all these fishing issues. Just simply ban all EU fishing in UK waters.

“The EU is so heavily reliant on UK fishing it would crumble overnight. And they would have no fresh fish to sell.

“Then the UK fishermen can demand whatever money they want because fresh fish would be in such high demand.

“The cards are all in the UK’s hands.”

Another reader agreed and said: “Should ban EU boats.”

A third wrote: “Stop issuing fishing licences to EU boats in our waters.”

One person added: “Disgusting! The French aren’t willing to pay full wack for rotten fish.

“Who do they think they are?”

Other readers suggested Britons should be encouraged to purchase British caught fish.

One person said: “Start selling to the British.”

Another user wrote: “British people should eat British caught fish.

“Products in shops should be more clearly marked with a Union flag if it has been caught by our fleet.”
