Tory MP John Redwood said he was confident Boris Johnson and Joe Biden would work together as leaders of the UK and US. While speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Redwood insisted the pair would be able to overcome the political differences of a Democrat President and Conservative Prime Minister. He highlighted the pair would be able to work together to achieve their climate change goals, an issue both have insisted is important.
Mr Redwood said: “I think there is natural cooperation between any President any Prime Minister because of shared interests and mutual concerns.
“The UK has always been one of the staunchest NATO ally, paying our fair share of the costs in the way that quite a lot of other countries do not do.
“We have shown we are willing to help America on difficult missions also.”
Mr Redwood insisted both Boris Johnson and Joe Biden remained linked in their drives towards fighting climate change.

He said: “There is now clearly a strong common shared policy interest in tackling carbon dioxide and dealing with climate change.
“Both are majoring on that and the UK will be chairing important meetings this year where America will wish to share and be a part of that particular process.
“I think interests and policies will bring the two together.
“Obviously there are political differences because it is a Democrat President and Conservative Prime Minister.

“We have had that same kind of twinning before just as we have had Republican Presidents and Labour Prime Ministers.
“You normally find that the national interests and mutual concerns overcome any political differences between the different parties.
Despite Mr Redwood’s predictions, current relations between the UK and US have remained strained due to the difficulties of the Northern Ireland protocol.
A former high-ranking official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said it was clear the Biden administration was in no hurry to sign up to new free trade deals.

Former Brexit Party MEP and commentator Ben Habib argued that regardless, the US will want a trade deal with the UK.
He said: “We are the United Kingdom – we are an independent sovereign nation and we’ve got to start behaving like one.
“There will be a bit of brouhaha if we terminate the protocol and then it will die down and that will be the end of it and they will do what is economically sensible for the US.
“They will not let Northern Ireland get in the way of a trade deal, no way.”
