The deputy Labour leader lashed out amid a backlash against the Government for protecting former minister Owen Paterson from an immediate suspension for breaking lobbying rules. Ms Rayner retweeted the front page of the Daily Mail which branded MPs “shameless”.

In her tweet, the deputy Labour leader used an asterisk to suggest the word “Conservative” was missing from the headline.

Ms Rayner’s tweet comes after she apologised last week for calling senior Tories “scum” at a reception at Labour’s conference in September.

She said: “I would like to unreservedly apologise for the language I used, and I would not use it again.”

Her apology came after a period of reflection while off work following a bereavement.

It also came after she was targeted by threats and at a time when Westminster was still mourning the loss of Sir David Amess, who was stabbed to death at a constituency surgery.

She added: “While I have been away from the cut and thrust of Parliament I have reflected on our political debate and the threats and abuse that now seem to feature all too often.

“I have also reflected on what I said at an event at Labour Party conference.

“I was angry about where our country is headed and policies that have made life harder for so many people I represent.

“But I would like to unreservedly apologise for the language I used, and I would not use it again.

“I will continue to speak my mind, stand up for Labour values and hold the Government to account.

“But in the future I will be more careful about how I do that and in the language that I choose.”

Ms Rayner’s latest tweet comes as the Government is facing growing anger after moving to overhaul MPs’ disciplinary process.

Tories were ordered not to back the cross-party Standards Committee’s call for Mr Paterson to be suspended from Parliament for 30 sitting days after it found he repeatedly lobbied ministers and officials for two companies paying him more than £100,000 per year.

Dozens of Tories abstained and 13 rebelled after being told to vote instead for an amendment to establish a new, Conservative-led, committee to reconsider both Mr Paterson’s case and whether a new standards system is needed.

The move was passed with a majority of 18 despite the reservations of some on the Conservative benches.

Mr Paterson said it would allow him to clear his name after “two years of hell”.
