Target adding beer, wine and alcohol for curbside and in-store pickup at 1,200 stores

Curbside pickup is getting more spirited at more then 1,200 Target stores across the country.

By the end of May, the retailer said it will add beer, wine and other alcoholic drinks to its drive-up curbside pickup and order pickup in 29 states. Target also is adding alcohol for same-day delivery where local laws allow.

Rick Gomez, Target’s chief food and beverage officer, said in a statement that making wine, beer and spirits available for pickup and delivery was a natural next step.

“Our adult beverage category is one of the fastest-growing divisions within our food and beverage business, and we continue to hear from guests how much they love our fast, easy and safe same-day services,” Gomez said.

Alcohol can be ordered on Target.com or the Target app, and shoppers should select “Order Pickup” to retrieve their order in store or “Drive Up” to have the order brought to their car outside the store.

Target mask policy: Target ends mask requirement for fully vaccinated customers

More mask policies: Walmart, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Starbucks and Publix no longer require masks for vaccinated customers

The expansion comes after pilots in Florida, California and South Dakota, Target told USA TODAY, noting stores saw more than 450% digital growth in the adult beverage category last year.

With this expansion, about 80% of Target stores that sell alcohol will fulfill adult beverage orders via order pickup and same-day delivery with Shipt. “We do plan to continue to work with our local teams and state regulators to roll out adult beverage same-day options to remaining store locations that sell adult beverage items in-store,” the company said in a statement.

Walmart has offered curbside alcohol pickup since 2019.

Target mask requirement dropped

Target’s announcement comes the same day the retailer announced it was dropping its mask requirement for fully vaccinated customers.

Target’s updated mask policy starts Monday for customers and employees, but the retailer still strongly recommends unvaccinated customers and employees wear masks. And customers who live in areas that have state or local mask requirements may still have to wear them – regardless of vaccination status.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new masking guidelines Thursday and said that fully vaccinated Americans, for the most part, no longer need to wear masks indoors and don’t have to wear masks outdoors, even in crowded spaces. Businesses, including Walmart, Trader Joe’s, Starbucks, Costco and others, quickly announced changes to their mask policies.
