Granger Smith, wife Amber reveal they’re expecting a baby boy almost 2 years after tragic death of son River
Country artist Granger Smith, who’s known for “If the Boot Fits,” and wife Amber revealed they’re expecting a new addition to the family in August: “A new Smith boy.”
The Smith family shared the news with a video announcement on Instagram Friday featuring their two kids, London, 9, and Lincoln, 7, and a pregnant Amber.
“I don’t have many words for this video. Life isn’t perfect. Sometimes it’s beat up and broken but it’s NEVER hopeless. God promises that,” Granger Smith captioned the video. “Our story isn’t finished yet, and neither is yours! Through our suffering and joy, God’s glory radiates through it all!”
Their pregnancy announcement comes almost two years after Granger and Amber Smith suffered a tragic loss when their 3-year-old son River Kelly died in a drowning accident.
Amber Smith shared the same video on her Instagram page, writing: “God has made a way we never thought possible. If I’ve learned anything over the last 2 years, it’s that I do not have as much control as I think I do.”
She said she never expected to be pregnant at 39, noting that though the last couple of years have been difficult, they’ve also been filled with “joy, hope, healing, growing and grace from God.” Amber Smith also shared a sweet message to her late son.
“Sweet Riv, because of the beautiful life you lived, we are forever changed and we will continue honoring your big, little legacy until we come home to you,” she wrote.
On Saturday, Amber Smith shared a photo of her sonogram and thanked everyone for their congratulatory messages.
“We are so thankful to all of you,” she wrote.

Two weeks after their son’s death, the grieving parents sat down for an emotional YouTube video to give a firsthand account of “how we’re doing and where we plan to go from here.”
“We are going to search for every bit of good we can find in this situation, the worst situation we have ever been through,” Smith said, while sitting next to Amber at their Texas home. “That’s my commitment to River’s legacy.”
Smith recalled the fateful day that changed their family forever, saying that “what happened to us that night defied all possibilities.”
“I was outside playing with London. We were doing gymnastics in the yard and the boys were doing a water gun fight,” he said. “I remember thinking … ‘Soak up this moment because it’s not going to last forever.’ Somewhere between 30 seconds and 3 minutes, we don’t know, Amber and I are inside our pool gate doing CPR on our son.”
After taking a hiatus from social media, Granger Smith returned to Instagram in September 2019 and gave followers an update.
“I haven’t said much on socials lately,” Smith wrote. “It’s not that I don’t have anything to say, it’s more that most things just don’t seem important enough to share.”
Since then, he explained, social media has become unimportant. “We all know that social media has become a mask … a highlight reel per say (sic), that we can hide behind and appear to promote our best moments of our best days. Eh … that stuff doesn’t matter.”
