Cricket Returns To Olympics After 128 Years
After a gap of 128 years, cricket will return to Olympics as a competition item.
It was among five sports events that have been officially added to the Los Angeles Olympic Games, 2028.
The 141st Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) also decided to include Baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash to LA28.
For baseball/softball, cricket and lacrosse it will be a return to the Olympic Games, while flag football and squash will be making their Olympic debut in LA.
The last time cricket was payed at an Olympic Games was in Paris in 1900.
In the 2028 edition of the global sports gala, cricket matches will be played in T20 format.
Baseball and softball have been part of several editions of the Olympic Games, most recently at Tokyo 2020.
Lacrosse was included in the 1904 and 1908 Olympic Games.
“The choice of these five new sports is in line with the American sports culture and will showcase iconic American sports to the world, while bringing international sports to the United States,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.
The IOC Session accepted the Executive Board’s recommendation to re-include modern pentathlon and weightlifting on the LA28 sports program.
With this, athletes from around the world will compete in a total of 35 sports disciplines on the biggest stage in sports.
The apex body of the Olympic Movement put on hold its decision to include Boxing in the LA28 Games, pending further clarification of the IOC recognized governing body for Olympic Boxing.
2028 Games will mark the third time Los Angeles hosting the Olympic Games.
