India Will Soon Use Blockchain Solutions In Telecommunication Industry
IBM aims to provide blockchain solutions in mobile portability and in Do Not Call registry. Sriram Raghavan, vice president of IBM Research and chief technology officer of IBM India and South Asia says
We have completed proof of concepts and pilots with all the major telecom providers and with TRAI in this space. We anticipate going into the New Year, we’ll start to see blockchain solutions getting rolled out.
Along with telcos, IBM research is in collaboration with Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). This collaboration addresses the issues among multiple entities related to mobile number portability and the Do Not Call registry.
According to Raghvan, the blockchain solution will enhance the functions of TRAI:
This gives TRAI as a regulator more visibility and spot malfeasance quickly. Mobile number portability too is a multiparty process involving a minimum of two telecom providers, where blockchain can play a role.
In February, TRAI reviewed the proof of concepts on blockchain prior to unveiling a set of regulations three months later. The next step is to select vendors to set up the systems following the TRAI guidelines.
The companies aim to roll out DLT-based systems in the next upcoming months. Do Not Call registry is the first one to move towards DLT. Basically, Blockchain is a digitally distributed collection of records where each person or entity has a copy of the ledger.
Raghavan says a private network includes a set of people and public network where anybody can join. He also elaborates saying anyone can have a public permissioned network. Although the network is implemented in public, one has to be permissioned to use. Sometimes these two dimensions are quite confusing.
Furthermore he added, for enterprise networks the permissioned approach is clearly fundamental since it is all about sharing sensitive business data. He also elaborated that companies do not do any business anonymously, it is usually mandated by law and regulations. Hence permissioned networks work.
